UNTIL THERE ARE NO DEAD TO GRIEVE, FIGHT LIKE HELL

On Monday, as we do every International Workers Memorial Day, we came together to reflect on our duty to Victorian workers and renew our pledge to 'remember the dead and fight like hell for the living.'

VTHC Secretary Luke Hilakari welcomed guests and VIPs to Argyle Square and spoke about the risks posed by climate change, the Ballarat mine catastrophe, Commonwealth workplace manslaughter laws, changes to our WorkCover scheme, and the ongoing review of OHS sentencing regulations.

Those in attendance included Andrea, partner of Robert Karkut, who tragically died almost two years ago. We were all deeply moved by her courageous speech. Andrea reminded us that every worker is a real person who has left behind friends and family who loved them and will miss them every day for the rest of their lives. Also that employers should ensure mental health initiatives are a part of every health & safety plan.

 

All in attendance were also greatly moved by the choir's performance.
