E-SAFETY RESOURCES TO MANAGE WORKPLACE ONLINE ABUSE

Using a digital platform, service, technology or device to bully, harass, threaten, intimidate or humiliate someone is online abuse. The behaviour is sometimes known as ‘technology-facilitated abuse’ or ‘tech-based abuse’. It can happen to anyone, anywhere – and that includes at work.

The eSafety Commissioner, in collaboration with Safe Work Australia, have developed free practical resources on how to manage the risks of online abuse at work.

OHS laws require employers to identify and manage risks to their employees’ health and safety – that includes the risk on online abuse – and to consult with their employees about hazards. Employers also have a positive duty to prevent unlawful or harmful behaviours like sexual harassment in the workplace.

If left unmanaged, these hazards can harm the business and its workers.

The Code of Practice offers information and guidance for both employers and employees on e-safety topics such as:

  • What is workplace bullying and harassment online?
  • How does online abuse happen?
  • Who is most affected?
  • How do I recognise online abuse at work?
  • What is online sexual harassment?
  • What can employers and workers do about workplace online abuse?
