Donald Trump’s first week executive orders have raised alarm bells among labour unions and workers, particularly concerning the safety and job security of federal employees. These orders, which revoke Joe Biden’s AI safety-related executive orders, mandate the return of federal workers to in-person work and freeze hiring across government agencies and the integration of artificial intelligence in the workplace. Workers fear that these measures could jeopardize both their safety and their job stability.
A key concern about AI technology is how it may impact jobs and workers, especially in sectors with high automation potential. Whilst it is unclear exactly the policy framework that will replace it, any future focus is likely to be on national security concerns and business profits over the right to privacy and a safe workplace. Removing the Executive Order sends a clear message to business owners that profit-over-people is an acceptable approach.
Australian unions are pushing for regulations that would safeguard workers' rights as AI begins to play a larger role in various industries, including through surveillance activities. The goal is to ensure that AI is implemented responsibly, without compromising job security, safety or privacy. See the VTHC submission to the Victorian Inquiry into Workplace Surveillance.
International conversations about AI regulation, particularly in Australia, highlight the urgent need for workplace protections in the face of new technologies. As AI continues to advance, it will be critical for Australia’s unions and lawmakers to continue to collaborate on evolving the national AI workplace policy that protect both workers' safety and job security.
On the political front in Australia, some in the LNP are already pushing for Dutton to take a leaf from the Republican/Trump playbook. Given Dutton’s tendency to mimic the strategies of Trump, and with our federal election nearing, workers and unions need to closely follow developments in this area.
