NRSPP: THE RISK OF SUN GLARE

The National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP) has released resources on Sun Glare: a Toolbox Talk and a quick ‘fact sheet’ particularly for light vehicle drivers.

The NRSPP, which is part of Monash University’s Accident Research Centre, says that sun glare impairs vision by causing fatigue and even momentary blindness, which in turn increases nervousness and anxiety, affecting attention, decision making and reaction time.

According to the NRSPP, not being able to see the road for just two seconds if traveling at 50km/h, doubles the risk of a crash. High rates of crashes involving certain driving manoeuvres have been related to sun glare during specific seasons, mainly during sunrise or sunset due to the sunlight being at a critical angle. Sun glare affects everyone in a different way, and studies have shown glare sensitivity increases with age.
