UK: COMPANY FINED £3m AFTER FATAL INCIDENT

The huge fine was issued after a worker was killed and another worker suffered serious injuries whilst working on the decommissioning of an oil rig

Last week a UK recycling company was fined £3m (A$5.9m) after a man died and another was seriously injured while decommissioning and dismantling a North Sea gas rig.

On 17 October 2019, the two workers were removing an overhanging piece of metal pipework weighing over 27 tonnes, from a jacket (a structure placed in the sea, designed to support oil and gas rig platforms), when it gave way. The pipework struck the mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) containing the men, throwing them to the ground about 12 metres below. Read more HSE Media release
