THREE FINGERS LOST IN MEAT MINCER INCIDENT – 20K FINE

Minh Hung Pty Ltd operates a grocery store, including a butchery and fishmonger where an employee fed meat into a mincer, by hand.

The mincer did not have any guard above the feed chute and the employee was not provided with a plunger or any other implement to assist, nor the necessary information and training to operate the mincer safely.

Foreseeably the employees right hand contacted the auger, crushing and trapping it, and despite the best efforts of emergency services and surgeons, the employee lost three fingers and part of a thumb on their dominant hand.

The offender pleaded guilty and was, with conviction, sentenced to pay a fine of $20,000 and to pay costs of $3,756.
