ITF 2024 CONGRESS – MARRAKECH - PADDY CRUMLIN RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT

Marrakech, Morocco, hosted the 46th Congress of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), where thousands of transport workers and trade union leaders gathered to re-elect key figures, including Paddy Crumlin as ITF President and Chair of the Dockers Section.

Among the notable motions passed was one advocating for equality for transport workers, led by Meryem Halouani from Morocco’s UMT, who asserted, “Our unity is our strong weapon.” Other delegates voiced urgent concerns on environmental issues affecting workers, particularly in the Global South, with calls to action echoing throughout the Congress.

The ITF's long-standing support for peace in the Palestine-Israel conflict was reiterated by Crumlin, who urged a humanitarian approach and renewed solidarity among workers. The Congress also reaffirmed the critical need to defend the right to strike, with attendees spotlighting rising far-right movements undermining workers' rights in Europe.

Celebrating 25 years of the ITF Women's Transport Workers’ Committee was an opportunity to emphasize the necessity for women to occupy decision-making positions within the industry.

Crumlin emphasized the Congress's commitment to justice and workers' rights amidst ongoing global challenges, with the Congress culminating in the adoption of the ‘Marrakech Policy’, setting a benchmark on the treatment of seafarers under Flags of Convenience - vital for ensuring fair working conditions and safety for all maritime workers. The collaborative spirit displayed throughout the event showcased the ITF's unified commitment to advocating for rights, equality, and sustainability in the global transport sector.
