FIVE KILLED IN VIETNAM MINE

Authorities in Vietnam have confirmed that five coal miners were killed after a mine in the north of the country. The incident occurred on Monday at a coal mine in Quang Ninh province, the country's largest coal mining area, near Halong Bay.

The dead, all males aged between 23 and 47, worked for the Hon Gai coal company un the Vietnam Coal-Mineral Group, which is state-owned. According to disaster authorities, heavy rainfall was reported at the time of the collapse. Other parts of the country’s north have also experienced heavy rain for days, triggering flash floods and landslides.

Deadly mine incidents are not infrequent in Vietnam, which despite increasing its investments in green energy, still relies heavily on coal-fired power plants. There have been seven other miners killed in the province’s mines since April this year.
