CRANE COLLAPSE AT DERRIMUT CONSTRUCTION SITE

WorkSafe is investigating a crane collapse incident that occurred last week at a Derrimut data centre construction site. The crane’s boom snapped in high winds, toppling onto powerlines, trapping the operator and crushing a car below.

The incident forced workers to evacuate the site and emergency services to embark on a high-risk rescue operation.

Emergency services rushed to the site after numerous triple-0 calls reported the collapse. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find the crane tangled in live powerlines and resting over vehicles, forcing an escalated response.

Specialist Fire Rescue Victoria crews, including the High Angle Rescue Team, worked to free the crane driver. No one was inside the car crushed beneath the machinery. Ambulance Victoria and police also attended the scene.

The crane operator exited the crane independently once it was safe to do so and was assessed by Ambulance Victoria.
