The Victorian CFMEU has issued an OHS Advice on Air Quality to remind workers that all non-critical outdoor work must cease when the EPA Air Quality Index level is Very Poor.
Air pollution, including bushfire smoke, contains a mixture of gases and very fine particles that are hazardous to health. Those most at risk are firefighters and other emergency service workers, and people working outdoors.
People with heart or lung disease (including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD), elderly people and children are at increased risk of being negatively affected by poor quality air. Pregnant people, newborns and people with certain health conditions such as emphysema, obesity or diabetes may also be more susceptible to effects from high levels of particulate matter in the air.
Employers and employees can act to reduce the risk of exposure to poor quality air by reviewing the VTHC Air Quality Standard and following the steps.
