AUSTRALIA COMMITS TO ILO FUNDAMENTAL CONVENTION – OHS FRAMEWORK

The recent ratification of all ten International Labour Organization (ILO) Fundamental Conventions by the Australian Government marks a significant milestone for Australian workers. This move underscores the government's commitment to strengthen workplace rights and safety in the Asia-Pacific and beyond.

A key moment was the overnight ratification of the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention 187 and the Safe and Healthy Working Environment Convention 191 during a tripartite ceremony in Geneva. With representatives from unions, employers, and government present, this collaboration demonstrates a unified approach to enhancing the conditions under which workers operate.

ACTU President Michele O’Neil commented on the significance of this milestone, stating, "Australia committed to leading the world in ensuring every worker has the right to a safe and healthy workplace." This commitment aligns with the ILO’s recent designation of a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental right, emphasizing the obligation of member countries to uphold and promote this standard.

The Albanese Government's dedication to improving workplace safety is evident through various initiatives, such as the ban on engineered stone and the comprehensive rollout of the Respect@Work recommendations aimed at combating gender-based violence. These measures complement the ratification of the ILO Conventions, reinforcing the commitment to uphold workers' rights and ensure their well-being.

Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Murray Watt, emphasized the government's message of respect for workers' rights, indicating that these developments not only promote better working conditions but also bolster Australia’s global reputation as a fair and secure place to work.

In representation of all Australian workers, the ACTU highlights that the fight for safe workplaces is a collective effort. Every union member plays a role in advocating for better conditions, and the government’s recent actions signal hope for continued progress. Ultimately, every worker deserves to go home safe at the end of their day, and this ratification establishes a basis for a safer future.
