ASBESTOS AND SILICA AWARENESS DAY 2024

Jarni Greatorex, Jessie Dean and Vicki Hamilton at Melbourne Asbestos and Silica Awareness Day

In the lead up to National Asbestos Awareness Week, running from 25 November to 1 December 2024, the Asbestos Council of Victoria is pleased to hold Asbestos and Silica Awareness events in Melbourne and Gippsland in November.

In Melbourne on 19 November a strong group of victims, supporters and advocates met at Flagstaff Gardens to hear from guest speakers and to remember those lost to asbestos and silica related illnesses.

The Choir of Hard Knocks performed a selection of inspirational songs for the event.

Jodie Deakes CEO Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency, Ben Davis CEO Victorian Asbestos Eradication Agency and Dr Gerry Ayers OHS&E Manager CFMEU spoke of their organisations’ work to prevent further harm from asbestos and silica and to support victims and their families.

Jarni Greatorex, mesothelioma sufferer, and her mother Jessie Dean, along with Joanna McNeill, silica-related illness sufferer and advocate, each brought their deeply moving personal stories to life for attendees.

This is a timely reminder of the far-reaching effects of asbestos and silica and the threat these substances still pose to current and next generations.

If you are around Gippsland next week, please make time to attend the second asbestos and silica awareness day ceremony.
