WORKSAFE GUIDE ON THE USE OF STEPS AND LADDERS TO SAFELY ACCESS STOCK

This month’s WorkSafe HSR News covers some OHS basics such as the Hierarchy of Control and how to establish Designated Work Groups, and also includes a guidance note about using equipment to safely access stock.

Such information may assist HSRs as part of consultation discussions, with their designated work group (DWG) members and management to address hazards and risks in accessing stock.

The guidance note gives advice to employers about using the right equipment to prevent workers from falling from heights while trying to access hard-to-reach items. This includes single and mobile step stools, step and platform ladders, and other equipment, such as elevating work platforms and forklifts.

We often see employers expecting staff to place or retrieve items from shelves or racks at height in retail, storage and manufacturing industries (including offices and libraries) without the correct equipment.

Using inappropriate equipment to access stock at height can result in workers falling from height leading to injuries including broken bones or even death. Using the appropriate equipment for the task will make it safer to place or retrieve items at height.

Follow the WorkSafe guidance notes below or check our Stepladders - OHS Reps page for more information.
