1 IN 50 IN MODERN SLAVERY

Alliance 8.7, the global partnership for eradicating forced labour, modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour around the world, report 50 million people globally are in situations of modern slavery. Modern slavery is a complex set of legal concepts that incudes forced labour, debt bondage, slavery, human trafficking and forced marriage. These are situations of exploitation where a person cannot leave due to threats, violence, coercion, deception, and abuse of power. There are many actors – including governments, employers, trade unions, and civil society – addressing modern slavery from a variety of angles. In many places, projects and initiatives tell workers about their rights before they move abroad, as well as provide legal assistance and skills training to give a second life to victims. There are conventions to ratify, laws to adopt and policies to implement that can help prevent modern slavery and protect victims.
