“IF YOU DON’T SOUND THE ALARM, WHO WILL?” - MATT PEACOCK (1952 – 2024)

Matt Peacock (1952 – 30 October 2024) was an influential Australian journalist whose career was marked by a staunch commitment to highlighting the dangers of the asbestos industry and supporting the union movement in its fight for worker safety. A veteran of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Peacock's investigative journalism played a critical role in raising awareness about the devastating effects of asbestos, particularly in the context of the workers' rights movement.

Peacock's journey in journalism began in 1973, but his dedicated focus on asbestos issues emerged in the late 1970s and continued for decades. His groundbreaking 1979 radio program highlighted the severe health impacts the local Aboriginal community faced in Baryulgil from asbestos exposure, setting a precedent for his future work. His most significant contribution, however, came with the publication of Killer Company: James Hardie Exposed in 2009 – a book that meticulously chronicled the negligence and deception of James Hardie Industries, showcasing how the company prioritized profits over the health of its workers and customers.

Matt Peacock's journalism provided vital support to unions advocating for asbestos victims' rights. By exposing the systemic failures that allowed asbestos-related diseases to proliferate, he empowered unions to demand accountability and justice for affected workers. His reporting laid the groundwork for essential legal and political reforms, making Australia a leading voice in asbestos eradication and reinforcing the safety standards that protect future generations

Peacock's advocacy extended beyond his writings; it resonated deeply within the union movement. Labour leaders often cited his investigations as crucial support in their fights against corporate misconduct. Reflecting on his career, colleagues have noted that Peacock's tireless commitment to uncovering the truth helped save countless lives and positioned him among Australia's most impressive journalistic voices in the battle against asbestos.
