Psychosocial Hazards in the Workplace

 The panel of speakers were:

  • Peter Earle, Organiser with the Transport Workers Union, gave a presentation on the causes and dangers of workplace fatigue;
  • Andrea Shaw, a well-known and respected OHS consultant, discussed changes in the structure of the workforce and how this has contributed to many Australians working longer hours.  According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics we work harder than most OECD countries.  Andrea’s main point is that we are now overloaded with work and that takes its toll on our health.
  •  the final presentation was given by Kristina Hoel, Legal Officer, Equal Opportunity Commission Victoria, who described what the Equal Opportunity Act has to say about psycho social hazards like discrimination and sexual harassment.  Kristina also explained the complaints process at the Commission and the right of active OHS Reps to protection from discrimination on the basis of what an employer may interpret as industrial activity.  Industrial activity is a protected attribute under the Equal Opportunity Act and cannot be the cause of discrimination.

The speakers’ Powerpoint presentations are at the bottom of this page and can be viewed and downloaded.  Gary did not provide a Powerpoint presentation as he prefers to speak off the cuff.
