Workplace bullies beware

The development of a bullying in the workplace policy

17 May 2002

Bullying in the workplace is a serious health and safety issue.

The Victorian Trades Hall Council has long recognised workplace bullying as a serious threat to the physical and emotional wellbeing of workers.

VTHC OHS Unit recently released a Hazard Information Sheet on Bullying in the Workplace.

WorkSafe released a Draft Code of Practice for the Prevention of Bullying and Violence in the Workplace for public comment in December 2001. A number of unions, including the VTHC, community groups, government departments, employer associations and individuals made submissions on the proposed Code.

As WorkSafe continues to develop the Code of Practice for the Prevention of Bullying in the Workplace, the VTHC Hazard Information Sheet provides OHS reps and workers who are subject to bullying behaviour with a set of guiding principles to identify and combat this unacceptable practice in the workplace.
